Who will protect me from a slayer with a bewitching gaze?

Do not rival him, O gazelle: he has surpassed you.

    A moon rising upon a bān-tree bough—

May God preserve him, though he lays the lovesick lover bare.

He sways with a figure that has bewitched us.

So desist, O boughs, from your swaying.

O you of wondrous beauty, you have wronged us.

Protection! Protection from your deadly assaults!

Yours is an essence through which you have captivated creation,

Through the varied forms of its beauty, drawn from your attributes.

O Love, be gentle with lovers.

We are like figures in your mirror.

How many veils lay upon your beautiful face,

Made of souls, when you appeared in your essence!

So unveil your face and efface the self from us,

And through your life revive the one among us who died of love.

For you we sold our souls and found relief

From their affliction; so favor us with your regard.

Through everything you appeared to us,

So we vanished, O Light, within your darkness.

I swear by the Safa and Marwa of my love,

When I strive, O Love, to please you,

My thought has not strayed from you; so understand, O

Soul, my words, if you are heedless.
