يا حبّذا عدلٌ حكم

يا حبّذا عدلٌ حكم

My beloved has ruled through my love.

Ah, how welcome a just judge!

وصبوتي فيها حكم

وصبوتي فيها حكم

تبدي الّذي قلبي كتم

تبدي الّذي قلبي كتم

And within my yearning lie wise lessons,

revealing what my heart concealed.

باطن ظهر نفى وهمي

باطن ظهر نفى وهمي

غائبٌ حضر محا رسمي

غائبٌ حضر محا رسمي

The hidden one appeared and banished my illusion;

the absent one arrived and effaced my form.

لمّا تجلّى بالجمال

لمّا تجلّى بالجمال

وقد تحلّى بالكمال

وقد تحلّى بالكمال

When he revealed himself in beauty,

having adorned himself with perfection,

عقدٌ بأسلاك الدلال

عقدٌ بأسلاك الدلال

في جيد جدواه انتظم

في جيد جدواه انتظم

a necklace, on strands of coquetry,

was strung upon the neck of his bounty.

ناشراً درر بها نظمي

ناشراً درر بها نظمي

مطلعاً غرر بها فهمي

مطلعاً غرر بها فهمي

Through it my verse scatters pearls;

through it my understanding brings forth radiant gems.

فيه ودار مغزلي

فيه ودار مغزلي

I spun the yarn of love-song

about him, and my spindle turned.

سدى ملام عذلي

سدى ملام عذلي

مع ما بأحشائي التحم

مع ما بأحشائي التحم

The warp of my reproachers’ blame

intertwined with what lay in my breast.

عاذلي نشر لواء لومي

عاذلي نشر لواء لومي

قل له فشرت في لومي

قل له فشرت في لومي

My reproacher unfurled the banner of blame against me.

Tell him: “You lie in blaming me.”

أنا الهوى وأنَّهُ

أنا الهوى وأنَّهُ

أنّي وعيني عينه

أنّي وعيني عينه

I am love, and it is

I; my essence is its essence.

أبو الغرام وابنُهُ

أبو الغرام وابنُهُ

أنا وديني الملتزم

أنا وديني الملتزم

The father of passion and its son

am I; this is the faith I hold to.

كلّما صدر من القومِ

كلّما صدر من القومِ

كلّه عِبر لذي الوهمِ

كلّه عِبر لذي الوهمِ

Everything that has come from the folk

is all instruction for one subject to illusion.

فنيت وجداً في الهُوَيْ

فنيت وجداً في الهُوَيْ

حتّى غدوت فيه حي

حتّى غدوت فيه حي

I was annihilated in ecstatic longing, in love,

until I came alive in it.

حيث الهوى لكلّ شيْ

حيث الهوى لكلّ شيْ

أصلٌ جرى من القدم

أصلٌ جرى من القدم

For love, for everything,

is a source flowing from eternity.

بحرٌ زخر بالصفا يهمي

بحرٌ زخر بالصفا يهمي

يقذف الدرر لذي العومِ

يقذف الدرر لذي العومِ

A sea surges with purity, pouring forth,

casting pearls to the swimmer.

فاسبح معي يا ذا الهوى

فاسبح معي يا ذا الهوى

فيه وغب عن السوى

فيه وغب عن السوى

So swim with me, O lover,

in it, and be oblivious to all else.

لكلّ صبٍّ ما نوى

لكلّ صبٍّ ما نوى

في الحبّ من قصد الهمم

في الحبّ من قصد الهمم

Each passionate lover has what he intends

in love, among the aims of high resolve.

فهو بالسهر نفى نومي

فهو بالسهر نفى نومي

ليلي بالسحر غدا يومي

ليلي بالسحر غدا يومي

For he banished my sleep through wakefulness;

my night, by enchantment, became my day.

نحن الّذي غبنا بهِ

نحن الّذي غبنا بهِ

سكراً بحان حبّهِ

سكراً بحان حبّهِ

We are the one in whom we vanished,

drunk in the tavern of his love.

محبوبنا بقربهِ

محبوبنا بقربهِ

جاد علينا بالكرم

جاد علينا بالكرم

Our beloved, through his nearness,

bestowed bounty upon us,

حيث بالنظر لنا يومي

حيث بالنظر لنا يومي

يفدي مذ خطر به أمّي

يفدي مذ خطر به أمّي

as he beckons to us with a glance.

My mother would ransom him, since he came to mind.

صلاته مع السلام

صلاته مع السلام

على الّذي هو الإمام

على الّذي هو الإمام

His blessing, together with peace,

upon the one who is the Imam,

للأنبيا كان الختام

للأنبيا كان الختام

وفيه بالحسن الختم

وفيه بالحسن الختم

who was the seal of the prophets;

and in him, with beauty, came the seal.

سيّد البشر هو الأمي

سيّد البشر هو الأمي

مبدع الغرر من النظم

مبدع الغرر من النظم

The master of humankind is the unlettered one,

the creator of radiant gems of verse.
