In the wake of a fragrant prayer,

After a fragrant prayer,

from a radiant garden of mystery,

from the garden of a blossoming mystery,

يهدي بليل عامر

يهدي بليل عامر

من باطنٍ وظاهرِ

من باطنٍ وظاهرِ

guiding through a night alive with worship,

offered in a night full of life,

inwardly and outwardly,

from within and without,

عند التجلّي الباهر

عند التجلّي الباهر

سرّاً بقلب حاضر

سرّاً بقلب حاضر

at the dazzling self-disclosure,

at the dazzling manifestation,

it gladdened you, your heart attentive,

secretly, with an attentive heart,

من سرّ سرٍّ سائر

من سرّ سرٍّ سائر

إلى علا الحضائر

إلى علا الحضائر

from the secret of a wayfarer’s secret

from the secret of a journeying mystery,

to the heights of the sacred precincts,

to the heights of the sanctuaries,

إلى الحبيب الفاخر

إلى الحبيب الفاخر

من نسل أصلٍ طاهر

من نسل أصلٍ طاهر

to the glorious Beloved,

to the illustrious beloved,

descended from purest stock:

of the lineage of a pure root,

محمّد المآثر

من هو خير ناصر

من هو خير ناصر

Muhammad, famed for noble deeds,

Muhammad of noble deeds,

he who is the finest helper

he who is the best of helpers,

وهو بلا مكابر

وهو بلا مكابر

عندي من الأكابر

عندي من الأكابر

and—none can gainsay it—

and he is, beyond dispute,

is, to me, among the greatest.

among the great in my eyes.

دام كبدرٍ سافر

في فلك المظاهر

في فلك المظاهر

May he endure like an unveiled full moon

May he endure like an unveiled full moon,

in the firmament of manifestations,

in the sphere of manifestations,

يجلي على الدوائر

يجلي على الدوائر

بنور قلبٍ عامر

بنور قلبٍ عامر

shining upon the spheres,

shining upon the circles,

radiant with his heart’s light,

with the light of a heart full of life,

في ستر مولى ساتر

في ستر مولى ساتر

وطيب عيشٍ وافر

وطيب عيشٍ وافر

under the protection of a sheltering Lord,

in the shelter of a sheltering Lord,

amid abundant, pleasant life

and the sweetness of abundant living,

وحفظ ربٍّ قادر

وحفظ ربٍّ قادر

من مكر كلّ ماكر

من مكر كلّ ماكر

and the safekeeping of an all-powerful Lord

and the protection of a powerful Lord,

from the guile of every schemer,

from the plotting of every schemer,

وكيد كلّ غادر

وكيد كلّ غادر

وحقد كلّ كاسر

وحقد كلّ كاسر

the plot of every traitor,

and the scheming of every betrayer,

and the rancor of every oppressor.

and the rancor of every destroyer.

هديّة المفاخر

هديّة المفاخر

جاءت كغيثٍ ماطر

جاءت كغيثٍ ماطر

This glorious gift

The gift of glories

came like pouring rain;

came like pouring rain.

قرت بها نواظري

قرت بها نواظري

وابتهجت سرائري

وابتهجت سرائري

my eyes were refreshed by it,

My eyes were gladdened by it,

and my inmost heart rejoiced.

and my inner secrets rejoiced.

فقمتُ خير شاكر

فقمتُ خير شاكر

نعمة فضلٍ صادر

نعمة فضلٍ صادر

So I arose in fullest gratitude

So I rose as the best of those who give thanks

for a blessing of grace flowing forth.

ونظّمت ضمائري

عقداً من الجواهر

عقداً من الجواهر

And I composed my heart’s thoughts

and my inner thoughts strung together

as a necklace of jewels

من الدعاء السائر

لقرب ربٍّ ساتر

from a prayer that journeys on,

seeking nearness to a sheltering Lord,

بكأس أنس دائر

بكأس أنس دائر

وختم مسك عاطر

وختم مسك عاطر

with a cup of intimacy passed around,

with a circulating cup of intimacy,

and a seal of fragrant musk—

and a seal of fragrant musk,

قرّة عين الناظر

قرّة عين الناظر

في أوّلٍ وآخر

في أوّلٍ وآخر

a delight to the beholder’s eye,

a delight to the beholder's eye,

at the beginning and the end.
