She appeared as a crescent moon and wore splendor as a mantle.

An oryx doe, for whom the Pleiades’ star became an earring.

Hers is a figure like a bough; in love’s court,

With it she dispenses justice to lovers of beauty.

She delights my eyes, a vision adorned with charms

That strain spiced wine for me from love’s burning anguish.

    تنظّمهم في عقد دولتها سمطا

    So all the beauties are subject to her command;

She strings them as a strand in the necklace of her sovereignty.

I was content to cast off my bridle in longing,

Madly in love with her, I knew no discontent in loving her.

Union with her and her rejection are alike to me,

Just as her withholding and giving are equal in my eyes.

Though I graze at ease in the garden of love,

And the blossoms of nearness’s spring spread carpets for me,

Yet, from the excess of my passion, out of jealousy,

I took a middle course with the reproachers.

Nor did love’s talebearer harm me with his reproach,

Even though reproach’s sting was like a speckled serpent’s.
