شراب التداني
Our cup’s wine grew delicate in harmony,
the draught of nearness,
عنfrom سناradiance أنسfellowship جامa goblet قدindeed شفّbecame transparent عنrevealing رشفsipping
عن سنا أنس جام قد شفّ عن رشف
قنانيflagons القيانthe singing girls
قناني القيان
from the radiance of a convivial goblet, now revealing sips from
the singing girls’ flagons.
وندامand drinking companions المدامthe wine بالسكرwith intoxication راحتwent forth
وندام المدام بالسكر راحت
سكارىdrunk الدنانthe wine-jars
سكارى الدنان
And the wine’s companions went forth intoxicated,
drunk on the wine-jars.
فيin مقامthe station الهيامecstatic love بالسرّof the secret باحتspoke openly
في مقام الهيام بالسرّ باحت
عنof خفيwhat is hidden الغوانيthe beautiful women
عن خفي الغواني
In the station of rapture, they disclosed the secret
of what lies hidden in the fair ones.
قامarose داعيthe herald الغرامpassionate love للنهلfor the first draught والعلّand the second draught
قام داعي الغرام للنهل والعلّ
منfrom صفاpurity الأوانيthe vessels
من صفا الأواني
Love’s herald arose for the first draught and the second,
from the vessels’ purity.
داعياًcalling للندامto the drinking companions حيّاhe greeted وحيعَلْand he cried “Come!”
داعياً للندام حيّا وحيعَلْ
فيin وردthe litany التهانيglad wishes
في ورد التهاني
Calling to the companions, he greeted them and cried, “Come!”
in the litany of glad wishes.
عندat ذكرthe mention السلامpeace سلمىSalma تبدّتappeared
عند ذكر السلام سلمى تبدّت
بحسنwith the beauty الحسانthe beautiful women
بحسن الحسان
At the mention of peace, Salma appeared
with the beauty of the fair ones.
وتحاياand greetings السلامpeace للكلّto all أهدتshe offered
وتحايا السلام للكلّ أهدت
بنيلthrough attaining الأمانيwishes
بنيل الأماني
And she offered greetings of peace to all
through the fulfillment of wishes.
قدindeed أماطتshe removed لثامa veil عنfrom وجهthe face ذاتEssence
قد أماطت لثام عن وجه ذات
بهاin it الكلّall فانيpassing away
بها الكلّ فاني
She has lifted a veil from the face of the Essence,
in which all passes away.
لاnot ترىis seen لاnot ترامis sought غيرother than صفاتattributes
لا ترى لا ترام غير صفات
بحسنin the beauty المعانيmeanings
بحسن المعاني
Nothing is seen or sought but attributes,
in the beauty of meanings.
أشهدتناshe made us witness نظامthe stringing لآليpearls العقودthe necklaces
أشهدتنا نظام لآلي العقود
بسمطon the strand المبانيforms
بسمط المباني
She showed us the stringing of the necklaces’ pearls
on the strand of forms,
بافتتاحwith the opening اختتامthe close توحيدaffirmation of oneness الوجودbeing
بافتتاح اختتام توحيد الوجود
فيin صوتthe sound المثانيthe lute strings
في صوت المثاني
with the opening of the close of being’s oneness
in the sound of the lute strings.
وصلاةٌand a blessing معwith سلامpeace لفتحupon the opening الشهودwitnessing
وصلاةٌ مع سلام لفتح الشهود
منfrom عينthe wellspring العيانdirect vision
من عين العيان
And blessings, with peace, upon the Opening of Witnessing,
from the wellspring of direct vision;
وهوand he is سرّthe secret الختامthe close بدءthe beginning الوجودexistence
وهو سرّ الختام بدء الوجود
مفتاحthe key البيانeloquence
مفتاح البيان
and he is the secret of the close, the beginning of existence,
the key to eloquence.
