قدح الشوق في الفؤاد زنادَهْ

قدح الشوق في الفؤاد زنادَهْ

فغدت ناره به وقّادَهْ

فغدت ناره به وقّادَهْ

Longing struck its flint within the heart,

The longing lit a flame in my heart

and its fire blazed fiercely within it.

So its fire has kindled within

لعبت بي أيدي سبا البين لمّا

لعبت بي أيدي سبا البين لمّا

أظهرت للمحبّ عنكم بعادَهْ

أظهرت للمحبّ عنكم بعادَهْ

Separation's hands toyed with me, scattering me like Sheba, when

The hands of those parted from me toyed with me

they revealed to the lover his distance from you.

When they showed the lover your distance

بعد جسمٍ لا بعد روحٍ وقلبٍ

بعد جسمٍ لا بعد روحٍ وقلبٍ

كيف هذا وقد أخذتم فؤاده

كيف هذا وقد أخذتم فؤاده

A body's distance, not that of soul or heart—

With no distance of body or soul or heart

how could that be, when you have taken his heart?

How can this be when you have taken my heart?

ليس بين القلوب منّا فراقٌ

ليس بين القلوب منّا فراقٌ

وهو للجسم حسب حكم الإراده

وهو للجسم حسب حكم الإراده

There is no separation between our hearts;

No separation lies between our hearts

and separation is bodily, by the will's decree.

That is only for the body by decree of will

فلقلبي في الغيب خير شهودٍ

فلقلبي في الغيب خير شهودٍ

فيراكم بالملتقى كالشهاده

فيراكم بالملتقى كالشهاده

So my heart, in absence, has the finest vision,

So my heart has the best of witnesses in absence

and sees you in reunion as though face to face.

It sees you in the gathering as if present

سعد القلب باللقا حين وافى

سعد القلب باللقا حين وافى

لي كتابٌ من مصطفى بنِ سعاده

لي كتابٌ من مصطفى بنِ سعاده

The heart rejoiced in reunion when there came

The heart rejoiced when it met

to me a letter from Mustafa ibn Sa‘adah.

A letter from Mustafa son of Sa’dah

فعليه تحيّةٌ وسلامٌ

فعليه تحيّةٌ وسلامٌ

ينتجان الحسنى له وزياده

ينتجان الحسنى له وزياده

So upon him be greetings and peace,

Greetings and peace be upon him

bringing him the best, and more besides.

That produce goodness and increase for him
