لمّاwhen خيّلsteeds of الأكدارsorrows عدتcharged upon
قلبيmy heart فأثرنand they stirred up بهwithin it نقعاdust
When the steeds of sorrow charged upon
my heart and stirred up dust within it,
فرأيتthen I saw بحمصin Homs عاصيهاits Orontes (ʿAsi, 'rebel')
قدhad شتّتscattered منof همّيmy cares جمعاa host
then I saw in Homs its Orontes,
which had scattered a host of my cares.
فهوso it is العاصيthe Rebel فيin طلعتهits appearance
إذas خرّfell prostrate لمولاهbefore its Lord طوعاwillingly
So it is the 'Rebel' in appearance,
as it fell willingly before its Lord.
فالعاصيyet the Rebel عينthe very same as الطائعthe obedient one إذas
يجريflows لطفاًgently يجريflows دمعاas tears
Yet the 'Rebel' is the very one who obeys, as
it flows gently, it flows as tears.
عجباًhow wondrous منat عاصٍa rebel طاعتهits obedience
لمجاورهto its neighbor جرتhas flowed نفعاas benefit
How wondrous a rebel whose obedience
has flowed to its neighbor's benefit!
