Peace be upon you, O Jamil of my Buthayna,

my friend Ibrahim, my soul's desire.

And if, like my own eye, you are asking after me,

then the east wind will tell you of my overwhelming longing.

And you do not have what we have, for I

seek protection for you from the fire of my passion and anguish.

And the heady scent of love's yearnings blazed,

fueled by my tears of love before I came to be.

I pass the night, my turmoil stirring my anguish

for you. Am I in your thoughts, favored with a passing thought?

    We lay awake in Nu'man, while you slept in Babylon;

for this is not the law of fidelity among lovers.

I have wasted away, while still alive, from longing and sorrow,

and sorrow's torment has left no remnant of me.

Ask why my heart has not forgotten the sanctuary's pledges, and whether

my eyes have tasted sleep and it has left its mark upon my eye.

So I implore you: what is the way to reunion,

while the sands of Zarud bar the way to my desire?

Perhaps the white nights will string our necklace,

and we shall be as we were, in the finest union.

For the scattering of pearls calls for their stringing

on the finest thread in a wondrous necklace.

We shall enjoy nearness, unnoticed by the ravages

of time, and with the tale-bearer off his guard.

So say to the reproacher lost in the wilderness of his error:

“God's peace be upon you”—and repel him with that which...
