محسناً مكرماً وبرّاً شفوقا

Be compassionate and merciful toward your parents,

Be kind and merciful to your parents

Kind, honoring them, dutiful, and tenderhearted.

Do good, give honor, piety, compassion

واخش بِرّاً يكون محضَ عقوقٍ

واخش بِرّاً يكون محضَ عقوقٍ

ومن البرّ ما يكون عقوقا

ومن البرّ ما يكون عقوقا

And beware of filial devotion that is sheer unfilial conduct;

Fear piety that would be sheer disobedience

And some filial devotion is unfilial conduct.

And of piety what would be disobedience
