شنّف السمع مطرباً بالسماعِ

شنّف السمع مطرباً بالسماعِ

فالهوى يسترقّ حرّ الطباعِ

فالهوى يسترقّ حرّ الطباعِ

Adorn the ear, stirring rapture with song;

The singer enchanted hearing with his singing,

for love enslaves the free-spirited.

For passion steals the temper of the hot-blooded.

وانصب الحال للهوى بانخفاض

وانصب الحال للهوى بانخفاض

فانتِها الخفضِ مبتدا الارتفاع

فانتِها الخفضِ مبتدا الارتفاع

And raise your state for love through humility;

And my state inclined to passion in its lowness,

for the end of descent is the beginning of ascent.

So end this lowness, beginning with rising high.

ثمّ مزّق ثوب الخلاعة سكراً

ثمّ مزّق ثوب الخلاعة سكراً

وتلافى تلافَه بالرقاع

وتلافى تلافَه بالرقاع

Then, intoxicated, tear the robe of abandon,

Then he rent the garment of sobriety in intoxication

and mend its damage with patches.

And repaired its rending with patches.

لا تولّي في حلبة الحبّ ظهراً

لا تولّي في حلبة الحبّ ظهراً

وتلقّ الهوى بصدر شجاع

وتلقّ الهوى بصدر شجاع

Do not turn your back in love's arena,

Turn not your back in the field of love,

and meet love with a brave breast.

And meet passion with a courageous heart.

وإذا ما دعاك داعي التصابي

وإذا ما دعاك داعي التصابي

فأجبه واغنم جميل المساعي

فأجبه واغنم جميل المساعي

And when the caller to youthful dalliance summons you,

And if the caller to trysts calls you,

then answer him and reap the best of striving.

Respond, and gain the beauty of endeavors.

نحن منّا بالوجد عنّا خرجنا

نحن منّا بالوجد عنّا خرجنا

وتركنا الوجود بعد الوداع

وتركنا الوجود بعد الوداع

Through ecstasy we went out of ourselves, away from ourselves,

We have departed from presence by ecstasy over us,

and left existence behind after farewell.

And left existence after farewell.

كم رعينا عهد الهوى وهو فينا

كم رعينا عهد الهوى وهو فينا

ملكٌ بات للرعيّة راعي

ملكٌ بات للرعيّة راعي

How often we kept love's covenant, while within us it was

How we kept faith with passion while it was in us,

a king who spent the night as shepherd to his subjects.

A king who spent the night being the shepherd of his flock.

كم غوادٍ في غور وجدٍ بوادٍ

كم غوادٍ في غور وجدٍ بوادٍ

سافراتٌ عن حسن بدر القناع

سافراتٌ عن حسن بدر القناع

How many dawn visitors appear in the depths of ecstasy,

How many valleys in a hollow, how much love in a valley,

unveiling the beauty of the full moon beneath the veil.

Travelers from the beauty of the full moon's rising.

تتهادى وبالمحاسن تهدي

تتهادى وبالمحاسن تهدي

كلَّ نور من وجهها الشعشاع

كلَّ نور من وجهها الشعشاع

She glides gracefully and, with her charms, bestows

Swaying, bestowing beauty through their charms,

all the light from her radiant face.

Every light from her radiant face.

أنا وحدي الشجيّ فيها بوجدي

أنا وحدي الشجيّ فيها بوجدي

بصري منطقي بها وسماعي

بصري منطقي بها وسماعي

I alone am heartsick for her in my ecstasy;

I alone am passionate for her in my love,

my sight is my speech of her and my hearing.

My sight, speech, hearing - all is she.

أخذتني منّي وأفنتني عنّي

أخذتني منّي وأفنتني عنّي

غيّبتني ببرقها اللمّاع

غيّبتني ببرقها اللمّاع

She took me from myself and effaced me from myself;

She took me from myself and caused me to perish from myself,

she made me vanish with her flashing lightning.

Veiling me with her flashing lightning.

صاح سر بي لسربها فشرابي

صاح سر بي لسربها فشرابي

حبّها والسوى سرابٌ بِقَاع

حبّها والسوى سرابٌ بِقَاع

Friend, lead me to her flock, for my drink is

My secret cried out to her secret horde, so my drink

her love, and all else is a mirage on a plain.

Is love of her, while all else is a mirage of the wastes.

غب غراماً بها تشاهد بديع ال

غب غراماً بها تشاهد بديع ال

حسن فيها الجميل في الإبداع

حسن فيها الجميل في الإبداع

Lose yourself in passionate love for her; you will behold the wondrous

Love her ecstatically, beholding the exquisite,

beauty in her, beautiful in its creation.

Beauty in her, beauty in creation.

واختم القال حيثما الحال إن رم

واختم القال حيثما الحال إن رم

تَ ابتداءً فليس في الاتساع

تَ ابتداءً فليس في الاتساع

And end speech wherever the inner state is, if you seek

And I conclude words wherever the state, if you intend

a beginning—for it does not lie in expansiveness.

Beginning, for there is no call for breadth.
