من غرامٍ ولوعةٍ واندهاش

What is manifest in love cannot be hidden—

passion, burning anguish, and bewilderment.

إنّما للمحبّ رقّة طبعٍ

إنّما للمحبّ رقّة طبعٍ

مثل ريح الصبا رقيق الحواشي

مثل ريح الصبا رقيق الحواشي

The lover has but a tender nature,

like the east wind, gentle at its edges.

حيثما الحبّ شأنه يرفع الحج

حيثما الحبّ شأنه يرفع الحج

بَ عن القلب بارتفاع الغواشي

بَ عن القلب بارتفاع الغواشي

Wherever love is, its way is to lift the veils

from the heart as the coverings rise.

وهو يجلو مرآة قلبٍ معنّىً

وهو يجلو مرآة قلبٍ معنّىً

بصفا الحب قابل الإنتعاش

بصفا الحب قابل الإنتعاش

And it polishes the mirror of a tormented heart,

receptive to renewal through love's purity.

فتراه منعّماً في عذابٍ

فتراه منعّماً في عذابٍ

مقعداً في غرامه وهو ماشي

مقعداً في غرامه وهو ماشي

So you see him blissful amid torment,

seated in his passion, even as he walks.

كلّ لطفٍ وكلّ ظرفٍ وذوقٍ

كلّ لطفٍ وكلّ ظرفٍ وذوقٍ

ليس إلّا عن المحبّة ناشي

ليس إلّا عن المحبّة ناشي

All gentleness, all grace, and all refined taste

arise from love alone.

مثل من كان لي حبيباً خليلاً

مثل من كان لي حبيباً خليلاً

وصديقاً محمّد البكداشي

وصديقاً محمّد البكداشي

Like the one who was my beloved and intimate companion,

and my friend, Muhammad al-Bakdashi.

قد أتاني منه لطيفُ كتابٍ

قد أتاني منه لطيفُ كتابٍ

قد طواه الصفا لنشر انتعاش

قد طواه الصفا لنشر انتعاش

A lovely letter from him has reached me,

which purity had folded to unfold renewal.

في سطورٍ بها معانيه تحكي

في سطورٍ بها معانيه تحكي

بدرَ تمٍّ قد لاح والليلُ غاشي

بدرَ تمٍّ قد لاح والليلُ غاشي

in lines whose meanings resemble

a full moon shining while night casts its veil.

قد أراشت جوانح الطير منّي

قد أراشت جوانح الطير منّي

حيث كانت للصبّ خير رياش

حيث كانت للصبّ خير رياش

They have feathered the wings of the bird within me,

for they were the finest plumage for the lovesick lover.

أعربت لحنَ حال صبٍّ مشوق

أعربت لحنَ حال صبٍّ مشوق

لم يزل من غرامه في تلاشي

لم يزل من غرامه في تلاشي

They voiced the melody of a yearning lover's state,

ever wasting away because of his passion.

أجّجت نار مهجتي بلهيبٍ

أجّجت نار مهجتي بلهيبٍ

وعليها حامَ الحشا كالفراش

وعليها حامَ الحشا كالفراش

They stoked the fire of my soul with flame,

and over it my heart hovered like a moth.

بدّل الدهر قربنا ببعادٍ

بدّل الدهر قربنا ببعادٍ

مثل أنسٍ قد عاد للإيحاش

مثل أنسٍ قد عاد للإيحاش

Time traded our closeness for separation,

like companionship that has turned to estrangement.

نسأل الله عودَ ورد التداني

نسأل الله عودَ ورد التداني

لقلوبٍ من اللقاء عطاش

لقلوبٍ من اللقاء عطاش

We ask God to restore the draught of nearness

to hearts thirsty for reunion,

في رياض الأذكار حيث تجلّى ال

حبّ فينا بلا رقيبٍ وواشي

حبّ فينا بلا رقيبٍ وواشي

in the gardens of remembrance, where there shone forth

love among us, with neither watcher nor talebearer.

وعلى الأخوة الكرام سلامٌ

وعلى الأخوة الكرام سلامٌ

من محبٍّ في وحشة استيحاش

من محبٍّ في وحشة استيحاش

And peace be upon the noble brethren,

from a lover in the loneliness of estrangement.

حبّهم لي سعادةٌ وعليهم

حبّهم لي سعادةٌ وعليهم

ليس يخفى ما كان بالحبّ فاشي

ليس يخفى ما كان بالحبّ فاشي

Their love is happiness to me, and from them

what is manifest in love cannot be hidden.
