A full moon appeared, revealing what was hidden.

His beauty, a mark traced in splendor.

ثغره البسم درٌّ منتظم

ثغره البسم درٌّ منتظم

من ذاق فهم وردَه الشبم

من ذاق فهم وردَه الشبم

His smiling mouth is a string of pearls.

Whoever tastes his cool spring understands.

إن تكن فهم في الهوى فهم

إن تكن فهم في الهوى فهم

من به يهم أو له يهم

من به يهم أو له يهم

If you have understanding, understand love.

Whoever pines for him or yearns toward him

فهو مقتحم بحره العرم

فهو مقتحم بحره العرم

من سلّم سلِم فيه إذ عصم

من سلّم سلِم فيه إذ عصم

plunges into his raging sea.

Whoever surrenders is safe there, when protected.

يا له مهمّ داؤه نهم

يا له مهمّ داؤه نهم

خطبه عمم صبّه عدم

خطبه عمم صبّه عدم

What a grave matter: its malady is insatiable.

Its plight is widespread; its lover is undone.

دمعٌ منسجم قلبٌ مضطرم

دمعٌ منسجم قلبٌ مضطرم

أمرٌ منبهم صبرٌ منصرم

أمرٌ منبهم صبرٌ منصرم

Tears flow; a heart burns.

The matter is obscure; patience is spent.

سمعٌ منصمم نطقٌ منبكم

سمعٌ منصمم نطقٌ منبكم

قلبٌ مصطلم نارٌ تضطرم

قلبٌ مصطلم نارٌ تضطرم

Hearing is deafened; speech is silenced.

A heart is stricken; a fire blazes.

حالٌ منفصم وهو ملتئم

حالٌ منفصم وهو ملتئم

داءٌ محتكم غيرُ منحسم

داءٌ محتكم غيرُ منحسم

A state is torn apart, yet joined together.

An overpowering illness remains unresolved.

وهو ملتئم غير ملتحم

وهو ملتئم غير ملتحم

وهو منضمم صاحبي ابتسم

وهو منضمم صاحبي ابتسم

It is joined together, yet not fused.

It is gathered together. My companion, smile

وبه اعتصم ودمدم وهم

وبه اعتصم ودمدم وهم

وجداً واستقم ركنه التزم

وجداً واستقم ركنه التزم

and hold fast to him; murmur and yearn

with longing. Stand upright; cling to his pillar

وبه استدم فهو مدعّم

وبه استدم فهو مدعّم

غير منهدم إن تكن كلم

غير منهدم إن تكن كلم

and endure through him, for it is supported,

not demolished. If you are wounded,

صرّح بالكلم فهو إن يلم

صرّح بالكلم فهو إن يلم

يعمي ويصم واللاحي المغم

يعمي ويصم واللاحي المغم

speak plainly of the wound: when it comes near,

it blinds and deafens. The veiled reproacher

أنفه رغم حيث قد حرم

أنفه رغم حيث قد حرم

ورده الشبم بل ولا يشم

ورده الشبم بل ولا يشم

is humbled where he has been denied

the cool spring. Indeed, he cannot even smell

برقه الوسم لا ولا يشم

برقه الوسم لا ولا يشم

عَرفه الشمم فهو منزكم

عَرفه الشمم فهو منزكم

its radiant lightning, nor can he smell

its lofty fragrance, for his nose is stopped,

غير مشتمم من يكن نظم

غير مشتمم من يكن نظم

في الهوى غنم وبه رقم

في الهوى غنم وبه رقم

unable to catch its scent. Whoever has composed verse

in love has gained, and through it has inscribed,

غير مغتنم باق منعدم

غير مغتنم باق منعدم

فانٍ مرتسم حقّ معتلم

فانٍ مرتسم حقّ معتلم

yet without reaping gain: enduring, yet vanishing,

perishing, yet imprinted; truth made known.

باطلٌ عدم عالم فهم

باطلٌ عدم عالم فهم

جاهلٌ علم ربّ إن فهم

جاهلٌ علم ربّ إن فهم

Falsehood is nothing; the knower understands.

The ignorant one learns. Lord, if he understands,

عبدٌ متّسم بدءٌ مختتم

عبدٌ متّسم بدءٌ مختتم

ختم مستتم بالحسن ختم

ختم مستتم بالحسن ختم

a servant is marked; a beginning reaches its end.

The seal is complete; with beauty it is sealed.
