يلومونthey reproach فيfor خلعcasting off العذارthe bridle أخاthe companion of الهوىlove
وعَذْرَاand the maiden ملاحِthe fair ones of الحُسنِbeauty تُجلَىis unveiled مِنَfrom الخدرthe secluded chamber
They reproach love's companion for casting off the bridle,
They blame me for losing my composure over a beloved,
While the maiden among beauty's fair ones is unveiled from her bower.
Yet the radiance of a beautiful face is an excuse.
فَعُذراًso pardon لعذّاليfor my reproachers علىconcerning خمرthe wine of حبّهاlove for her
وماand not شربواthey drank كأسيmy cup وقدand indeed جهلواthey did not know أمريmy state
So pardon my reproachers concerning the wine of loving her:
So I ask my critics to excuse me for the wine of her love,
They have not drunk my cup, and they know nothing of my state.
When they have not tasted my cup, nor understood my state.
وقدand indeed أنكرواthey condemned شطحيmy ecstatic utterances وخلعيand my casting off restraint وصبوتيand my passion
فَوَالعصرso, by Time إنسانُthe human being of العواذلthe reproaching women فيin خسرloss
And they have condemned my ecstatic utterances, my casting off restraint, and my passion.
They rejected my passion, rapture and intoxication,
So, by Time, the reproaching mortal is in loss.
Yet, by my life, passionate lovers have the best excuse!
عمواthey became blind فيbehind حجابthe veil of الجهلignorance عنto حبّlove for حسنهاher beauty
وماand not عندهمin their possession علمٌknowledge بأنّof the fact that الهوىlove عذريmy excuse
They are blind behind the veil of ignorance to love for her beauty,
Veiled in the cloak of ignorance about her beauty's love,
And they do not know that love is my excuse.
They know not that passion itself is my excuse.
