We are all enamored of his beauty.
We are all enamored with his beauty,
And a cup of his love went round among us.
And from his love we have a house of sorrow.

His glances assailed us with arrows
His glances have shot us with arrows
From eyelids, with the eye's brow as a bow.
From eyelids whose eyebrows are bows.

He has hit the mark and grievously wounded
He has struck the target and inflicted deep wounds
A lovesick heart—and one seized by passion has no shield.
Upon a passionate heart that has no shield.

So understand the matter through taste, and ascertain it;
So understand this through taste, and realize
Then distinguish, and sip the wine of union.
Then separate, though love's wine is mingled.

Do not be held captive in the chains of understanding,
Do not be in chains of understanding gloomy,
By a mind whose prison is illusion.
With a mind that from fantasies has fetters.

Like the jurist who cloaked himself in selfhood,
Like the jurist who threw himself down
And whose learning his own desire has led astray.
While from his passion came reckless folly.

فبهاfor in them للعشّاقfor lovers قدindeed طابhas proved sweet غرسُplanting
And plant love in the gardens of youthful dalliance;
And plant love in the gardens of accord
For there, planting has proved sweet to lovers.
For lovers there have found planting sweet.

ماno علىupon منwhoever يحبّloves حسناءَa beautiful woman بأسُblame
And hold fast to the cord of love for beautiful women;
And hold to the rope of the love of the beautiful ones -
No blame rests on one who loves a beautiful woman.
No harm upon one who loves a beauty.

I died to live and perished to remain
Love—blind to all but him, and mute.
Like love's folk, blind to all but the beloved, deaf, mute.
