1. بدر التجلّي صبرت ليلك

    فينا نهاراً يجرّ ذيلك

    Full moon of revelation, you endured your night,

    Among us by day, as it drags your train.

  2. والشمس لاحت كي تستميلك

    يا بدر فاعطف بفيض الوجود

    And the sun shone forth to win you over.

    O full moon, be gracious with the outpouring of being.

  3. واجر فيضك يحيي أرضك

    يمسي روضك زين

    And let your outpouring flow, reviving your earth;

    Your garden becomes beautiful at evening.

  4. حسن زينب ثمّ ربرب

    عند حسنك شين

    The beauty of Zaynab, then of a herd of gazelles,

    Is ugliness beside your beauty.

  5. بالله قل من لك أفتى

    بالصدّ عنّي والميل

    By God, tell me who gave you a ruling

    To shun me and turn away,

  6. حتّى علّمت غصن الرياض ميلك

    يا غصن فاكفف لحاظ الصدود

    Until you taught the gardens' bough your sway?

    O bough, restrain the glances of rejection.

  7. كف أغضاك كيف أرضاك

    حبٌ مضناك بين

    Stop averting your gaze—how can I please you?

    Your languishing lover's love is plain.

  8. وارحم الصبّ حيث قد صب

    مدمع النحب عين

    And pity the lovesick one, for he has poured

    Sobbing tears from his eye.

  9. سلمى الجمال إذا تجلّت

    بالحسن منك البها تحلّت

    Salma of beauty, when she reveals herself,

    Adorns herself in splendor with beauty from you.

  10. عقداً فريداً يفيض نيلك

    وكلّ حَسنَا رداح خرود

    Your bounty pours forth a peerless necklace.

    And every full-hipped, bashful beauty

  11. تعني فيضك تجني روضك

    تبغي حوضك هين

    Seeks your outpouring and harvests your garden,

    Seeks your pool, so readily reached.

  12. طاب نهلا وهو أحلا

    من يجلي رين

    Sweet is its draught, and it is the sweetest

    Of those that clear away tarnish.

  13. يا خلّ خلِّ الملام واترك

    وفي سبيل الغرام فاسلك

    O friend, leave reproach and let it go,

    And follow the path of passionate love.

  14. متى يهد الهيام حيلك

    هناك يبقى ويفنى الوجود

    When love's frenzy breaks your strength,

    There, being abides and passes away.

  15. فانف غمضك واطف رمضك

    وَفِ بعضَك دين

    So banish your slumber and quench your burning,

    And repay a debt to part of yourself.

  16. واشدُ واطرب واحْدُ في الركب

    أين تذهب أين

    And sing, rejoice, and chant among the caravan—

    Where are you going, where?

  17. فانشد وحلِّ جيد الغواني

    بالعقد من جوهر الأغاني

    So sing, and adorn the beauties' necks

    With the necklace of the jewels of song.

  18. فبالمثاني تشفي عليلك

    فاسمع بها توحيد الوجود

    For with the lute strings you heal your ailing one;

    So hear in them the oneness of being.

  19. تلق فيضَك جاد روضَك

    من سماء العين

    You will find your outpouring has watered your garden

    From the sky of the eye;

  20. غادق السحب يُنبت الحبّ

    يمحو نقط الغين

    Rich in rain-clouds, it makes love grow,

    Erasing the dot of ghayn.

  21. يا برق وادي العقيق رفرف

    على عقيق الدموع تعرف

    O lightning of al-Aqiq Valley, flutter

    Over the carnelian of tears, and you will recognize

  22. جفناً يحاكي بالنحب سيلك

    يا برق أنجز بوفاء الوعود

    An eyelid that mimics your torrent in sobbing.

    O lightning, faithfully fulfill the promises.

  23. وفِ ومضَك وانف نقضَك

    عهد الأمر عين

    And make good your flash, and banish your breach of faith.

    The covenant of the matter is its very essence.

  24. لح لذي الوجد واذكر العهد

    من ليالي الرقمتين

    Flash for the yearning one, and recall the covenant

    From the nights of al-Raqmatayn.
