It shines in an ascendant of good fortune.

Then shone, then shone the morning of fair women,

So it gleamed, gleamed, dawned, dawned

Whose figures sway.

The slender ones swaying in the garden of cheeks

تتثنى في زهر روض الخدّ

تتثنى في زهر روض الخدّ

تتراأى للمجتني لورد

تتراأى للمجتني لورد

She sways among the blossoms of the cheek’s garden.

Appearing as rosebuds for the enamored

She appears to the gatherer of roses.

Thus it exhaled fragrance, exhaled aroma, breathed perfume, diffused scent

ففاح فيّاح أقاح رداح

ففاح فيّاح أقاح رداح

And fragrance wafted—scented daisies, full-hipped

The shapely ones, busty

Maidens with budding breasts.

My state, my condition is like a chain

حاني حالي كالسلسال

حاني حالي كالسلسال

من جريال ذات الخال

من جريال ذات الخال

Tender, sweet, like limpid water,

Of pearls with moles

From the red wine of her with the beauty spot.

Say to him who did not learn proper manners

قل للّذي لم يحتذ العَرف الشذي

قل للّذي لم يحتذ العَرف الشذي

من راحها الروحي

من راحها الروحي

Say to him who has not followed the sweet fragrance

From her spiritual, intoxicating wine

From her spiritual wine:

When she of splendor appears, it hints without speaking - I see you, beware

إذا لاحت ذات البها يوحي عماك عماك

إذا لاحت ذات البها يوحي عماك عماك

أراك إيّاك جسمي بلا روحي

أراك إيّاك جسمي بلا روحي

When the radiant one appears, yūḥī wine blinds you, blinds you.

I see you, my body without my soul

I see you—you yourself; my body is without my soul.

Oh guide who has sung

ألا أيّها الحادي الّذي قد غنّى

ألا أيّها الحادي الّذي قد غنّى

مع الصبا في الركب

مع الصبا في الركب

O camel-driver who has sung

With the morning breeze in the caravan

With the east breeze in the caravan,

Set up passions of love, infatuations

أقام هيام غرام أوام

أقام هيام غرام أوام

من فؤاد الصب

من فؤاد الصب

He aroused longing, passion, burning thirst

From the heart of youth

From the ardent lover’s heart.

Stop by the valley of sweet, pleasing agony

عرج على وادي العذيب العذب

عرج على وادي العذيب العذب

لقد حلا ورده للقلب

لقد حلا ورده للقلب

Turn aside to the sweet valley of al-ʿUdhayb.

Its roses have sprouted for the heart

Indeed, its roses have grown sweet to the heart.

أوجبت لي السلب

Songs, beautiful women, abodes, meanings

That caused me to be robbed

Have brought about my dispossession.

In the melodies is the wine of melodies

في الألحان خمر الحان

في الألحان خمر الحان

والأدنان للندمان

والأدنان للندمان

In the melodies is the wine of taverns,

And for the lovesick is the reproach

And the wine-jars are for drinking companions.

So drink to this singing

فاشرب على هذا الغنا

فاشرب على هذا الغنا

كأس الطلا من لحننا المعرب

كأس الطلا من لحننا المعرب

So drink to this singing

A cup of entertainment from our Arab melody

A cup of wine from our expressive melody.

For its singing is a cup that intoxicated, stirred, lifted up, overwhelmed

فالغنا كأسه قد أطرب جلا حلا علا غلا

فالغنا كأسه قد أطرب جلا حلا علا غلا

في خمرنا اليوحي

في خمرنا اليوحي

For singing—its cup has enraptured: it shone, grew sweet, rose high, grew dear

With our wine that inspires

In our yūḥī wine.
