What ails Rayah, now that our bond is severed?

For she showed no pity and kept no pledges to us.

She departed, and my heart's solace and consolation departed.

And she provisioned me with sorrow's whispers and pain.

She has begun to heed the words of the camp's talebearers,

Though I had known her to be deaf to them.

God be praised for our days, when our company was united,

And our life was free from the hurt of vexation.

Days when we feared no lurking foe, and no reproacher

Visited us there; nor did we heed whoever acted unjustly.

Days when she laid her forearm beneath me and covered me

With her hips, raining the steady showers of her union upon me.

And I would kiss her mouth as she smiled,

And Time itself had smiled with a joyful mouth.

She loved what I loved, and I loved all she loved,

And Love's judge ruled in our inmost parts.

We played, forgot our cares, and dozed, not kept awake

By any talebearer; whenever he saw us, he turned away or kept silent.

Until separation assailed us without pausing,

Unjustly, and scattered a company once united.

May your milk never flow, O separation that bereaved me!

And would that your calamity had perished before reaching us!

As though you had never seen before me a grief-stricken lover,

Who wandered distraught from his suffering and had fallen ill.

I am he who subdued kings, and they submitted,

And employed the keen, cleaving sword and the pen.

I am the most exalted of earth's kings in rank,

Yes, and the greatest in aspiration among mankind's kings.

My merits are like the horizon's stars in number,

And my bounty to my visitors puts the steady rains to shame.

Like the lion in might when the stealthy lion attacks,

And like the sea in bounty when the vast sea surges.

My palm overflows with bounty that never ceases

Upon those seeking gifts, while my keen sword overflows with blood.

Bitter in punishment to whoever invites it,

Sweet in disposition, munificent when mercy is shown.

I am the son of Nabhan, a noble lord among kings; is there

One to vie in glory with a hero who has soared to the sky?

I led armies and shamed kings, and—

Gave horses, and ruled Arabs and non-Arabs.

Ask Amir, the sons of Umar, and Ka'b; and ask

Quda'ah: the ignorant are not like those who know.

And Jabir, Yazid, and al-Ibad; and ask

Shubanah and Aziz: who charged against them?

Whoever you wish among them will tell you that I am a king

Who has given lavishly—and I dispel the injustice of wrongdoers.

If Death were embodied as my opponent and came out to duel me,

Then I would surely fell him, leaving him prostrate—or he would flee.

With the sword I wiped tyrants out of existence, just as

Through bounty and kindness I gave being to those bereft of both.

When I speak of my merit, its envier says,

“How truthful he is!”—and so does the tongue of praise, assuredly.
