أشاقكَhas it stirred your longing? برقٌlightning بالصُّفيحةِat al-Sufayha لامعٌgleaming
أرقْتَyou lay awake لهbecause of it والخاليُwhile one untroubled البالِin mind هاجعُsleeps
Did gleaming lightning at al-Sufayha stir your longing?
A spark flashed in the tin like lightning
You lay awake because of it, while the carefree slept.
Keeping you awake while the tent was quiet
فنوَّخَthen it settled مستنسَّاًmoving swiftly وغارَand vanished هُنيئةًfor a moment
وأومضand flashed فيin جنحِthe folds الدُّجىof darkness وهوwhile it was ساطعradiant
Then it halted its swift course and vanished for a moment,
It startled happy and hid shyly
And flashed in night's dark folds, shining bright.
And glimmered in the wings of night radiantly
فأيقظso it awakened وجداًpassion هاجعاًsleeping بينbetween أضلُعيmy ribs
وهيَّجَand stirred شوقاًlonging لمhad not يزلceased وهوwhile it was وادعُundisturbed
It awakened a passion sleeping between my ribs,
Awaking latent passion in my ribs
And stirred a longing that had always lain undisturbed.
And exciting longing that never calmed

إذاwhen ضمناheld us together فوقَupon الفراشthe bed المضاجعُthe sleeping places
Through it I recalled, late at night, Rayah's smile,
I remembered it smiling like a fluttering flag
When our sleeping places held us together upon the bed.
When we gathered above the bedding

Unhurried, slender-waisted, fair and soft,
Graceful white ankles glimpse under her gown
Her noble lineage is like the sun, white and radiant.
As immaculate as the shining sun

Her waist-wrap is too narrow for the fleshy curves of her rump,
Her wrapper is too narrow for her graceful stride
And the anklet's ring is filled, though the anklet is wide.
And her anklet strains though loose
وطيرٍand a bird دعاcalled بعدafter الهُدوّthe stillness قرينَهits mate
فبتso I spent the night سهيراًsleepless باكياًweeping وهوwhile it was ساجعُcooing
And a bird called to its mate after all had grown still,
A bird called his mate after warbling
So I spent the night sleepless and weeping while it cooed.
I stayed up weeping while he slept
فقلتso I said لهto it ياO طيرُbird مالكَwhat ails you?
أراعكَhas it frightened you? مثليas it has me منfrom يدِthe hand البينِof separation رائعُa terror
So I said to it: O bird, why are you lamenting?
I asked him, “Bird why do you mourn
Has a terror from parting's hand frightened you as it has me?
Did absence startle you like me?”
فقالَso it said نعمyes كناwe were قرينيْtwo companions محبةٍin love

It said: Yes, we were two companions in love,
“Yes,” he said “We were lovers
Then a grievous calamity of parting tore us apart.
Parted by fate’s cruel blow”
لقدindeed جَلَّgrew grave خطبthe calamity البينِof separation فيناamong us وخصَّناand singled us out

Grave indeed was parting's calamity among us; we were singled out
Fate was harsh in separating us
For its sundering by an ill-omened, deceitful age.
Singling us out with its guile
رمىmay ... strike اللهGod شملَthe union البينِof separation بالبَينِwith separation والنوىand distance
ليصنعَso as to do فيهto it ماwhat بناto us هوit صانعُis doing
May God strike parting's union with parting and distance,
May God reunite those parted by parting
To do to it what it is doing to us.
He who parted us can reunite us

A wasting love has burrowed between my sides;
Love penetrated my ribs enticing me
God, what my ribs have held within me!
My ribs could not contain it

كماas حنَّcried out in longing مقرونِbound الملاطينthe two flanks نازعُyearning
I yearn—though what good is yearning for Rayah?—
I yearn futilely for that fluttering flag
As one bound about both flanks cries out in longing.
As the bereft lover yearns for his departed love

وهلand is there عاشقa lover إلاexcept لعشقَيto my love راجعُreturning
I am the lover, lovesick and enslaved by passion;
I am the ardent afflicted lover
And does not every lover return to a love like mine?
And what lover does not return to love

I pass the night like one snakebitten, struck down
I stay up like the sleepless night wanderer
By one of the speckled snakes, deadly poison in its fangs.
Whose mouth the viper’s venom fills

If a bird laments, I lament; or if lightning flashes,
When a bird cries or lightning flashes
My tear ducts spill the tears I had kept back.
My tears flow from their resting place

You are beyond reach, O Fate

Will you bear affliction with the patience of the noblest,
Should I be patient like the noble?
And be rewarded for this patience—or give way to grief?
So you reward this patience or not?

If you pierced that fluttering flag yesterday
Destroying myself in Rayah's wake.
Today I follow its traces

O Rayah, love has carried off my very soul;
O fluttering flag, love has twisted my guts
Neither is my burning anguish quenched, nor does patience help.
Neither solace nor patience soothes the pain

Your night-visiting phantom wandered back to my bed;
Your bright phantom haunts my bed
For I am content, Rayah, with a phantom of you.
A glimpse of you contents me

Behold, I am open in my love and humbly pleading;
Know that I openly court love
And I answer its call and obey.
Responding to its call obediently

Will be led by them or lead them submissively
