يقولون لي ألفاظُ هجوك عندنا

يقولون لي ألفاظُ هجوك عندنا

إلى القَلبِ من ألفاظِ مدحِك أسبَقُ

إلى القَلبِ من ألفاظِ مدحِك أسبَقُ

They tell me, “For us, your words of satire

They say to me, your blame's words with us

reach the heart sooner than your words of praise.”

To the heart, faster than your praise's words

فقلت لهم كذبٌ مديحيَ فيكُمُ

فقلت لهم كذبٌ مديحيَ فيكُمُ

وهجوي لكم صِدقٌ وللصدقِ رَونَقُ

وهجوي لكم صِدقٌ وللصدقِ رَونَقُ

So I said to them, “My praise of you is falsehood,

So I said to them, my praise of you is a lie

and my satire of you is truth—and truth has a luster.”

And my blame of you is truth, and truth has grace
