قدindeed كنتُI used to أرجوكI hope in you للبلوىin affliction إذاwhen عرضتit arose
قد كنتُ أرجوك للبلوى إذا عرضت
فصرتُso I came to أخشاكI fear you والأيامَand the days للغِيَرِfor reversals of fortune
فصرتُ أخشاك والأيامَ للغِيَرِ
I once looked to you for help when affliction struck;
I used to hope for you when troubles came
But now I fear you and the days for their reversals.
But now I fear you and time for others
أخشىI fear وحكميَthough my proper course is أنto ارجوhope ولاand no عجبwonder
أخشى وحكميَ أن ارجو ولا عجب
وربَّماand sometimes يتأذَّىis harmed الروضُthe garden بالمَطَرِby the rain
وربَّما يتأذَّى الروضُ بالمَطَرِ
I fear, though I ought to hope—and no wonder:
I fear yet hope, no wonder in that
Sometimes a garden is harmed by rain.
Sometimes the garden is harmed by the rain
