How long will you let loose the reins of estrangement?

Losing life and losing you are alike.

So mend my wing through reunion; shameful is

the neglect of friends by men of virtue.

I am jealous for you, lest you follow

in friendship any paths but those of gallant youths.

And I fear your bitter reproach as I never feared

the points of ash-wood spears beneath the battle dust.

I did no wrong that I should beg your mercy; rather, within me is

a longing for the wrongdoer to win your compassion.

And suppose me the wrongdoer—am I not your brother?

Why not forgive your brother who has wronged?

Cover, with the trailing hems of your forbearance,

the pages of a wrongdoer who reaps remorse.

And often a prudent man dislikes punishment,

so that he may gain the pleasure of forgiveness.

How auspicious was my bird of omen when I met you,

in the days when my bough was the freshest of boughs!

Were it not for parting, I would not fear; and were

love's star to fall, my heart would be safe from madness.

    وبقربكم أحببتُ دارَ هواني

    With you far away, I hated the abode of my honor;

and with you near, I loved the abode of my humiliation.

    انَّ التعهُّدَ صيقلُ الاحسانِ

    So renew your kindness by caring for me;

indeed, attentive care is the burnisher of kindness.

And recognize that I have been afflicted with a company:

seeking escape from them [unclear word]—thus—

until, through joy, I return forgetful

that I was once among the sons of sorrows.

And after despair my mind returns, aspiring

to every hope, maiden or matron.

And after I cease yearning for youthful passion, I am stirred by

the eyes of oryxes and the necks of gazelles.

    God bless the Makramis, those

before whom the noble fell prostrate upon their chins,

who sincerely counsel the king, knowing

that sincere counsel is faith's adornment,

and who, through love of Muhammad's family, tread

the paths of guidance in private and in public.

So praise of them is a means of reaching the heights,

and allegiance to them [a safeguard] from time's calamities.
