باليأس قلبي أن يكون لقاءُ
And dear ones—after parting from them, I consoled
And my dear ones I consoled after their absence
my heart with despair of ever meeting again.
With despair my heart that there will be a meeting

والى الترنُّم يفزعُ الادباءُ
I long for them, and singing is my refuge;
I yearn for them and my recourse is chanting
and men of letters seek refuge in singing.

ولربّماand sometimes شَبَّعتهI sated it بتنفُّسٍwith a breath
ولربّما شَبَّعته بتنفُّسٍ

فيكاد يَصدَع قلبيَ الصعداءُ
And sometimes I have sated it with a breath,
And maybe I sated it with a breath
so a deep sigh nearly cleaves my heart.
Then almost my lofty heart would split
