To God I complain of what we see in our steeds:
To God I complain of what we see in our steeds
They collapse, emaciated, their marrow scant.
How little is their flesh as they weakly proceed

And if the siege has wasted them, yet how often
If siege has made them wither, then one may find
A slain man has writhed in his blood among them.
Amid their ranks, many dead left behind

I am free, and the son of al-Hurr; my shoulder is supported
I'm free, and freeborn's son upon my shoulders
By a neck strong at its base, held high in adversity.
Long-suffering, staunch, amidst disasters and disorder
