فَلاso neither كوفَةٌKufa أُمّيmy mother وَلاnor بَصرَةٌBasra أَبيmy father
وَلاnor أَناI يثنينيdeters me عَنِfrom الرِّحلَةِthe journey الكَسَلlaziness
Neither Kufa is my mother nor Basra my father,
Neither Kufa is my mother nor Basra my father,
nor does laziness deter me from travel.
And no indolence can make me shirk from travel.
فَلاso do not تَحسبنيthink me اِبنَIbn (son of) الزُّبَيرal-Zubayr كَناعِسٍlike a drowsy man
إِذاwhen حَلَّhe halts أَغفىhe dozes off أَوor يُقالُit is said لَهُto him اِرتَحَلdepart!
So do not think me, Ibn al-Zubayr, like a drowsy man,
Think me not like the tribesman Naa'is,
who, when he halts, dozes off, or is told, 'Depart.'
Who, if he rests, takes to slumber, or told: "Saddle up!" is slow.
فَإِنfor if لَمnot أزركI visit you الخَيلthe horses ترديgallop عَوابِساًgrim-faced
بِفُرسانِهاwith their riders حَوليaround me فَماthen not أَناI بِالبَطَلa hero
For if I do not visit you with grim-faced horses galloping,
If you behold not my steeds descending as predators
with their riders around me, then I am no hero.
With horsemen round me, then I am not the hero.
وَإِنand if لَمnot تَرَyou see الغاراتِthe raids مِنfrom كُلِّevery جانِبِside

And if you do not see raids from every side
If the raids come not at you from all sides
upon you, and soon regret it, O man,
Swiftly to your regret, O man,
فَلاthen may no وَضَعتlay aside عِنديin my presence حِصانَa chaste woman قِناعِهاher veil

فَلاso do not تَخدَعنيdeceive me بِالأَمانيwith hopes وَالعِلَلand excuses
then may no chaste woman lay aside her veil before me.
Then have I laid my mare's cheek-strap aside;
So do not deceive me with hopes and excuses.
Deceive me not with hopes and pretexts.
فَإِنَّكَfor you indeed لَوeven if أَعطَيتَنيyou gave me خرجtax revenue فارِسٍFars

For even if you gave me the tax revenues of Fars,
For if you give me tax of a horseman's wage
and all the level land, and the villages of al-Jabal,
And land, all equal, with mountain villages,

by your grandfather, I would not accept, nor undertake a course
You will not find me accept it or come to terms
that pleases you. Despair of my return—may you be bereaved!
Pleasing you; so give up hope of my return, O fool!

Nay, forever—or grim-faced horses will come upon you,
Nay, but time will bring you raiding steeds
gaunt and lean-bellied, bearing bright swords and spears,
With braids swinging, bearing destruction and captivity,
بِفِتيانِwith young men صِدقٍof integrity لاno ضَغائِنgrudges بَينَهُمamong them

with true-hearted young men, with no grudges among them,
With truehearted youths between whom no rancor lurks,
who help whoever is destitute and give to whoever asks.
Who aid the helpless and give to him who asks.
أَلَمhave ... not يَأَتِكُمreached you يَومَon the day of العذيبِal-Udhayb تَجالُديmy fighting
بِهِthere شيعَةthe followers of المُختارِal-Mukhtar بِالمُنصلِwith the sword الأَفِلnotched
Have you not heard of my fighting on the day of al-Udhayb,
Came there not on you the day of al-‘Udhayb, when my adherents
against al-Mukhtar's followers there, with a notched sword?
Quartered the allies of al-Mukhtar with blunt skewers?
وَبِالقَصرِand at the palace قَدalready جَرَّبتُمونيyou tested me فَلَمand did not أخَمfalter
وَلَمand not أَكُI was وَقافاًone who hangs back وَلاnor طائِشاًreckless فَشَلfainthearted
And at the palace you tested me, and I did not falter;
By the palace you proved me, and I did not waver
nor was I one to hang back, nor rash and fainthearted.
Or miss the mark, confused, to fail.
وَبارَزتُand I dueled with أَقواماًmen بِقَصرat Qasr مُقاتِلMuqatil
وَضارَبتُand I crossed swords with فُرساناًhorsemen وَنازَلتُand I faced in combat مَنwhoever نَزَلstepped forth
And I fought men in single combat at Qasr Muqatil,
I engaged war-bands in the palace of the warrior
and crossed swords with horsemen, and faced whoever stepped forth.
And took on horsemen, grappling with any who came forth.
