For reproach neither spares nor leaves anything,

And it brings you nothing but anguish.

No excuse remained for Sa'd by which I might pardon them,

Nor for Mazad; vile indeed was what they did.

And the Harithis—I did not approve of what they uttered

Before the emir; the worst speech is slander.

They hurried—that they... we come to their emir [wording unclear].

And with their necks they bowed to humiliation.

For you have reached the water; taste the aftermath of your departure.

May neither quenched thirst nor sated hunger please you thereafter.

What do they say, while Ibn al-Hurr is held captive?

Madhhij had designs on him, its nose cut off.

Madhhij has been shrouded in what cannot be washed away

By the Euphrates' water, because al-Naj' did not attend.

Those who strike the heads of the tribes,

Where baldness itself is struck from their crowns.

And those who thrust, whose hands did not tremble

When the long spears quiver in the men's hands.

Lords with high-bridged noses, as though they were

Gleaming swords that rust has never covered.

I hope for Abu al-Nu'man's intervention, when they gave [wording unclear].

And one like him shoulders weighty affairs.

For if Ubayd Allah is to be freed from chains,

There is no hope beyond you of securing his release.

So strive—may I and all the peoples be your ransom.

Beyond this, there is no further course of good endeavors to follow.

So open your hands, for goodness is eagerly sought—

Its lofty heights—while the people's fortunes wrestle.

An endeavor and a noble deed have already been presented to you,

From Malik; and thus is goodness sought out.

    بَينَ الرجاءِ وَبيض الضيقِ مُتسعُ

    And safety and fear have their alternating days;

Between hope and the bright blades of distress lies ample room.
