Whenever you demand what I owe and withhold

what is mine, I cannot bear that patiently.

I am humiliated and cast aside, then my counsel is sought.

And what man gives his counsel under compulsion?

I saw the palms of the benefactors before you

full, while my palm was empty of your bounty.

    وَلَو شِئتُ قَد أَغنَيتُ في حَربِكُم قَدرا

    Long have I restrained myself from what might unsettle you;

yet had I wished, I could have made my mark in war against you.

And had I wished, battalions would have marched upon you:

I see them [perhaps startled], dust-gray, heading toward your precincts,

upon them men who, in battle, fear neither

death’s arrows nor the tawny Rudayni spears.
