    Indeed, I saw a man in a desolate valley,

    Like a lion when it springs upon a champion.

    Massive of shoulder—had you seen the crown of his head

    Amid the men, you would have likened him to a camel.

    I walked beside him awhile, with no fear of him,

    Save for looking about me: could I see a thicket?

    لا يَعلَمُ الناسُ غَيري عِلمَ ما فَعَلا

    I sent him tumbling among rivers and valleys;

    No one but me knows what he did.

    إِنَّ الغِدافَ وَرَبّي وافَقَ الأَجَلا

    He is called al-Ghidaf, and his head has drooped;

    Indeed al-Ghidaf, by my Lord, met his appointed end.

    He began questioning me about it as I stabbed him,

    So he fell headlong upon his snout, sprawled on the ground.
