وَأَبيَضand a bright sword قَدalready نَبَّهتهُI roused it بَعدَafter هَجعَةٍa slumber
وَقَدand already لَبِسَput on اللَّيلُthe night القَميصَthe shirt الأَرَندَجاblack-tanned leather
And a bright sword I roused after a slumber,
And white I had awakened after slumber
While night had donned its shirt of black leather.
And the night had worn the orange shirt
وَجَدتُI found عَلَيهِupon it مَغرَماًa debt فَقَبضتُهُso I collected it
وَفَرَّجتُand I relieved ماwhat يرجىis expected بِهِbecause of it أَنthat يُضَرَّجاit be stained with blood
I found a debt upon it, and collected it,
I found him lovesick so I took him in
And relieved the distress for which it was expected to be bloodied.
And I relieved what I hoped would give him comfort
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhen قَوميmy people دَعَونيthey called me لِنَجدَةٍfor aid
شَدَدتُI tightened نِطاقيmy belt حينَwhen أُدعىI am summoned لأَسرَجاso I might saddle up
And whenever my people called me for aid,
And whenever my people called me for help
I tightened my belt when summoned to saddle up.
I’d gird my belt when summoned to saddle
فَأَكشِفُso I dispel غُمّاهاits anguish وَأَكسبُand I gain مَغنَماbooty
وَأُطفيand I quench الَّذيthat which قَدalready كانَwas فيهاwithin it مُؤَجَّجاkindled
So I dispel its anguish and gain booty,
So I’d uncover their worries and gain spoils
And quench what had been kindled within it.
And extinguish what once was burning within
