إِنَّindeed المَلامَةَreproach لاnot تُبقيspares وَلاand not تَدَعُleaves
وَلاand not تَزيدُكَadds to you إِلاexcept أَنَّهاthat it is جَزَعُanguish
Indeed, reproach spares nothing and leaves nothing.
Blaming does no good, nor does it let up,
Nor does it bring you anything but anguish.
And only increases your distress.
لَمdid not تُبقِleave مَعذِرَةًan excuse سَعدٌSa'd فَأَعذُرهاso I might pardon her
وَلاnor مُرادٌMurad وَكانواand they were بِئسَhow evil ماwhat صَنَعواthey did
Sa'd left no excuse by which I might pardon her,
Do not blame Sa'd, make excuses for him,
Nor did Murad; evil indeed was what they did.
They had no purpose - how vile their deed!
وَالحارِثِيّونَand the Harithites لَمdid not أَرضَI approve الَّذيwhat نَطَقواthey uttered
عِندَbefore الأَميرِthe emir وَشَرُّand the worst of المَنطِقِspeech الشَّنِعُthe foul
And I disapproved of what the Harithites said
I did not like what the Banu Harith said
Before the emir; foul speech is the worst.
To the prince - evil is obscene speech.
تَبادَرواthey rushed أَمنَهُمtheir safety نَأتيwe approach أَميرَهُمtheir emir
وَلِلمذَلَّةِand to humiliation فيin أَعناقِهِمtheir necks خَضَعواthey bowed
They raced for their safety as we approached their emir,
They betrayed their safety, we'll go to our prince,
And bowed their necks in submission to humiliation.
And they lowered their necks in disgrace.
فَقَدso indeed وَرَدتُمyou came to water فَذوقواso taste غِبَّthe aftermath of مصدَرِكُمyour departure from water

You have indeed come to the water; now taste the aftermath of your departure.
You have arrived, so taste the bitterness of your origin,
May neither quenched thirst nor satiety bring you pleasure afterward.
After it no ease or satiation comforts you.

What do you say, while Ibn al-Hurr is imprisoned?
What will you say, and Ibn Al-Harr imprisoned,
Madhhij has designs on him, and the nose is cut off.
Mudhijiyya threatened him and his nose hacked off.
قَدindeed جُلِّلَتhas been shrouded مَذحِجٌMadhhij ماwhat لَيسَis not يَغسِلُهُwashes it away

Madhhij has been shrouded in what cannot be washed away
Mudhij stained what the Euphrates' waters cannot wash away
By the Euphrates' waters, since the nomadic bands were absent:
For Al-Naja'a did not witness it.
الضَّارِبونَthose who strike مِنَfrom among الأَقوامِthe peoples هامَهُمُtheir heads

Those who strike the heads of the peoples,
The warriors among the tribes directing their zeal
Where baldness is stripped from their crowns;
Where the noble manes are cropped.
وَالطاعِنونَand those who thrust وَلَمand did not تَرعَشtremble أَكُفُّهُمُtheir hands

And those who thrust, whose hands did not tremble
The spearmen whose palms did not tremble
When the tall spears were splintered in the warriors' hands;
When the tall spears in the warriors' hands were wielded.

Lords with lofty noses, as though they were
The aroma of the bedouins, chiefs like
Bright swords that rust has never tarnished.
The shine of swords that smiths have not forged.
أَرجوI hope for قِيامَthe rising of أَبيAbu نُعمانَNu'man إِذsince رَهِبواthey feared

I hope Abu Nu'man will take a stand, since they were afraid,
I hope that my father Nu'man will take a stand when they are fearful
And one like him can shoulder a decisive task:
And will take on the gravity of the matter.
بِأَنby ...-ing تَفكَّyou free عُبَيدUbayd اللَّهِAllah مِنfrom كَبَلٍa shackle
فَلَيسَfor there is no بَعدَكَafter you فيof إِخراجِهِbringing him out طَمَعُhope
By freeing Ubayd Allah from a shackle.
That he may release the slaves of Allah from shackles
For after you, no hope remains of his release.
After you there is no hope to set them free.
فَاِجهِدso strive فدىًa ransom لَكَfor you وَالأَقوامُand the peoples كُلُّهُمُall of them
ماthere is no بَعدَهاbeyond it عَنconcerning مَساعيendeavors toward الخَيرِgood مُتَّبَعُa course to follow
So strive—may I and all the peoples be your ransom!
Make an effort - your ransom - and all the tribes
Beyond this, there is no further course in striving for good.
After it do not neglect good endeavors.
فَاِبسطso spread يَدَيكَyour two hands فَإِنَّfor indeed الخَيرَgoodness مُبتَدَرٌeagerly sought
عَلياؤُهُits summit وَجُدودُand the fortunes of القَومِthe people تَصطَرِعُwrestle
So spread both your hands, for men race toward goodness,
So extend your hands, for charity is quickly rewarded,
Toward its summit, while the people's fortunes wrestle.
Its loftiness and the tribe's generosity plead for it.
قَدindeed قُدِّمَتhas been offered لَكَto you مَشعاةٌa cause for renown وَمَأثَرَةٌand a noble deed

A cause for renown and a noble deed have been set before you
A torch and beacon have been presented to you
From Malik; and thus goodness is sought out.
From Malik, and goodness is thus regained.
