لَمّاwhen اِعتَرَتِassailed الهُمومُthe sorrows مِنfrom ذِكراكِremembrance of you
لَمّا اِعتَرَتِ الهُمومُ مِن ذِكراكِ
وَالنَفسُand the soul طَوَتconcealed سَرّيَmy secret مِنfrom جَرّاكِyour doing
وَالنَفسُ طَوَت سَرّيَ مِن جَرّاكِ
When sorrows assailed me at the thought of you,
When worries assaulted me from remembering you
And my soul concealed my secret because of you,
And my soul concealed my secret from your pulling away
فيin شَرحِexplaining صَبابَتيmy ardent longing أَفاضَتpoured forth عَينيmy eye
في شَرحِ صَبابَتي أَفاضَت عَيني
ياO أَلسنةَtongues الدُموعthe tears ماhow أَجراكِfreely you flow
يا أَلسنةَ الدُموع ما أَجراكِ
In telling of my ardent longing, my eye overflowed:
My eyes overflowed with explaining my youthfulness
O tongues of tears, how freely you flow!
O tongues of tears, what is your reward
