هَبSuppose أَنّيَthat I مِثلَlike ماwhat حكتshe said أَجفوهاI shun her
هَب أَنّيَ مِثلَ ما حكت أَجفوها
لمwhy تُعرضshe turns away عَنّيfrom me وَأَناwhile I أَقفوهاI follow her
لم تُعرض عَنّي وَأَنا أَقفوها
Suppose I shun her, just as she said;
If I were as you described, unresponsive,
Why does she turn away from me while I follow her?
You would not turn away while I pursue.
هَبSuppose أَسهُمُarrows لَحظِهاof her glance فُؤاديmy heart جَرَحَتwounded
هَب أَسهُمُ لَحظِها فُؤادي جَرَحَت
لِمwhy ذَرَّsprinkled عَلىupon جرحيَmy wound مِلحاًsalt فوهاher mouth
لِم ذَرَّ عَلى جرحيَ مِلحاً فوها
Suppose the arrows of her glance have wounded my heart;
Grant that her glances pierce my heart with wounds,
Why has her mouth sprinkled salt upon my wound?
Why does she pour salt upon my injury and rub?
