مُذsince غالَcarried off حَبيبَتيmy beloved قَضاءٌa decree of fate نَفَذاcame to pass
مُذ غالَ حَبيبَتي قَضاءٌ نَفَذا
فيin عينيَmy eye منfrom تَأمُّلgazing at الوَردroses قَذىgrit
في عينيَ من تَأمُّل الوَرد قَذى
Since fate’s decree came to pass, carrying off my beloved,
Since my beloved left by fate's decree
There is grit in my eye from gazing at roses.
My eyes see only dust when gazing on a rose
ماhow أَغبنَنيcheated I am وَقيلand it was said ليto me ذاكَthat بِذاin exchange for this
ما أَغبنَني وَقيل لي ذاكَ بِذا
ماذاwhat أُعطيَwas given الثرىthe earth وَماذاand what أَخَذاit took
ماذا أُعطيَ الثرى وَماذا أَخَذا
How cheated I am—and I was told: ‘That in exchange for this!’
How ignorant was I when told that this would be!
What was the earth given, and what did it take?
What does the earth bestow? What does it dispose?
