ياO لائِمَتيmy reproacher (female) عَلىfor اِتَخاذيmy taking سَكَناa beloved companion
يا لائِمَتي عَلى اِتَخاذي سَكَنا
صادَفتُI found شَمائِلاًmanners وَوَجهاًand a face حَسَناbeautiful
صادَفتُ شَمائِلاً وَوَجهاً حَسَنا
O you who reproach me for taking a beloved companion,
Oh critic who blames me for choosing this abode
I found fine manners and a beautiful face.
I met a beauty, of perfect grace
لَوif أَبصَرَهاhe beheld her المَيِّتُthe dead man فيin حُفرَتِهِhis grave
لَو أَبصَرَها المَيِّتُ في حُفرَتِهِ
حَقّاsurely نَفَضَshook off التُربَthe earth وَشَقَّand tore الكَفَناthe shroud
حَقّا نَفَضَ التُربَ وَشَقَّ الكَفَنا
If the dead man beheld her in his grave,
If the dead were to see her in his grave
He would surely shake off the earth and rend the shroud.
Surely he would shake off the dust and rend his shroud
