ماnot زارَنيvisited me الحَبيبُthe beloved فيin الظَلماءِthe darkness
ما زارَني الحَبيبُ في الظَلماءِ
إِلّاexcept that بَدَتِappeared الشَمسُthe sun لِعَينِto the eye of الرائيthe beholder
إِلّا بَدَتِ الشَمسُ لِعَينِ الرائي
Never did my beloved visit me in the darkness
My beloved did not visit me in the darkness
without the sun appearing to the beholder's eye.
Except the sun appeared to my beholding eye
مِنout of غَيرَتهاher jealousy السِترَthe veil عَلَيناover us هَتَكَتshe tore away
مِن غَيرَتها السِترَ عَلَينا هَتَكَت
لاno شَكَّdoubt كَذاكَthus ضرَّةُthe co-wife of الحَسناءِthe beautiful woman
لا شَكَّ كَذاكَ ضرَّةُ الحَسناءِ
Out of her jealousy, she tore away the veil covering us;
Out of her jealousy she tore away the veil from us
No doubt, that is how a beauty's co-wife behaves.
Without doubt, such is the harm of a beautiful woman
