ماnot عُروَةُ‘Urwa هاجَهُstirred him هَوىlove for عَفراءِ‘Afra
ما عُروَةُ هاجَهُ هَوى عَفراءِ
ماnot الوامِقُWamiq نازِعاًyearning إِلىtoward العَذراءِ‘Adhra
ما الوامِقُ نازِعاً إِلى العَذراءِ
Neither ‘Urwa, stirred by love for ‘Afra,
Neither does 'Urwah's passionate love desire an 'Ufra
nor Wamiq, yearning toward ‘Adhra,
Nor does the towering aspire to the Virgin.
ماnot الظامئُthe thirsty one يَشتَهيcraves زُلالَpure, sweet الماءِthe water
ما الظامئُ يَشتَهي زُلالَ الماءِ
مثليlike me لفراقbecause of parting from حَضرَةِthe presence العَلياءِexalted
مثلي لفراق حَضرَةِ العَلياءِ
nor the thirsty one, craving pure water,
Nor does the thirsty long for the freshness of water,
is like me at parting from the exalted presence.
As I long for separation from the Abode on High.
