لَوif ذاقَtasted وَبالَdire consequences أَمريَmy plight العُشّاقُthe lovers
لَو ذاقَ وَبالَ أَمريَ العُشّاقُ
لَمnot يُعطِgrant أَمانَsafety المُهَجِthe hearts الأَشواقُthe longings
لَم يُعطِ أَمانَ المُهَجِ الأَشواقُ
If lovers tasted the dire consequences of my plight,
If lovers tasted what my love entails
longings would grant hearts no safety.
No refuge would give safety to their ails
ماnot العبرَةُthe tear ماwhat تَمجُّهُdisgorge it الآماقُthe eye-corners
ما العبرَةُ ما تَمجُّهُ الآماقُ
هذيthese مُهَجٌhearts سالَflowed بِهاwith them الأَحداقُthe pupils
هذي مُهَجٌ سالَ بِها الأَحداقُ
What the eye-corners disgorge is no tear;
What matter weeping that the nights beguile
these are hearts the pupils have poured forth.
