أَبرَمتُI twisted firmly لَهُfor him الحَبلthe rope فَنَباbut he turned away نَكثاhe broke faith
أَبرَمتُ لَهُ الحَبل فَنَبا نَكثا
فيمwhy اِنتَقضwas broken العَهدthe covenant وَماذاand what حدثاhappened
فيم اِنتَقض العَهد وَماذا حدثا
I twisted the rope tight for him, but he turned away and broke faith.
I tied the rope for him, but he broke his oath
Why was the covenant broken, and what happened?
Why did he break the pact and what happened?
ياO وَيليwoe to me إِذwhen آمنhe felt secure ماwhat كنتI was بِهِwith him
يا وَيلي إِذ آمن ما كنت بِهِ
قَدindeed سارَhe went عَلىalong طيّتهhis intended course واِنبَعَثاand he set off
قَد سارَ عَلى طيّته واِنبَعَثا
Woe to me! Once he felt secure in what I was to him,
Oh my sorrow when he believed in what he did
He went his chosen way and set off.
He followed his own way and arose
