كَمhow often قُلتُI said وَخَطَّهُand his facial down عَلىupon الماءِthe water نَقَشhe engraved
كَم قُلتُ وَخَطَّهُ عَلى الماءِ نَقَش
ماwhat ضَرَّharm did it do لَوif الماءَthe water عَلىupon ناريَmy fire رَشّhe sprinkled
ما ضَرَّ لَو الماءَ عَلى ناريَ رَشّ
How often I have said, as he engraved his down upon water:
How much I said and engraved it on water
What harm would it do if he sprinkled water on my fire?
It would not hurt if water was sprinkled on my fire
قَدindeed غالَنيit has undone me الخَطُّthe facial down عَلىupon عارِضِهhis cheek
قَد غالَني الخَطُّ عَلى عارِضِه
أَبصِرهُlook at him فَتَحتَand beneath جَنبهhis side النارَthe fire فَرَشhe spread
أَبصِرهُ فَتَحتَ جَنبه النارَ فَرَش
The down upon his cheek has undone me.
Writing on his cheek has overwhelmed me
Look at him: he has spread fire beneath his side.
Look at it, under his side fire is spread
