لَوif قابَلَنيfaced me الحَبيبُthe beloved كالمرآةِlike a mirror
لَو قابَلَني الحَبيبُ كالمرآةِ
وَجَّهتُI turned لَهُtoward him وَجهيَmy face للإِخباتِfor humble submission
وَجَّهتُ لَهُ وَجهيَ للإِخباتِ
Had the beloved faced me like a mirror,
If my beloved met me like a mirror
I would have turned my face toward him in humble submission.
I would turn my face to him in shyness
لَمnot يَختَلِفِdiffer الظاهِرُthe outward وَالباطِنُand the inward ليfor me
لَم يَختَلِفِ الظاهِرُ وَالباطِنُ لي
إِنif كُنتُI had أَرَيتُهُI showed him صَفاءَpurity of الذاتِthe essence
إِن كُنتُ أَرَيتُهُ صَفاءَ الذاتِ
The outward and inward would not have differed in me,
My outward self and inner self would not differ
if I had shown him the purity of my essence.
If I saw in him the purity of being
