وَالنَفسُand the soul صَبابَةًout of longing إِلىtoward اللَهوِpleasure صَغَتinclined
The roses’ spreading shadows beguiled me,
And the soul, in longing, inclined toward pleasure.
إِنif أَنتَشِI grow intoxicated كالصَباlike the east wind فَمماthen from what اِحتَمَلَتcarried
مِنof نشركyour fragrance شَمَّةًa whiff كؤوسٌcups فَرَغَتbecame empty
If, like the east wind, I grow drunk, it is from what was borne—
A whiff of your fragrance—by cups now empty.
