شاوَرتُ نداماي لَدى الإِصباحِ
فيabout دَفعdispelling هُمومٍcares غلبتoverwhelmed أَفراحيmy joys
في دَفع هُمومٍ غلبت أَفراحي
I consulted my drinking companions at daybreak
About dispelling cares that had overwhelmed my joys.
فالمطربso the musician بِالأَصابِعwith the fingers الدَفعَdispelling رأىthought
فالمطرب بِالأَصابِع الدَفعَ رأى
وَالساقيand the cupbearer اختارchose دَفعَهاdispelling them بِالراحِwith wine
وَالساقي اختار دَفعَها بِالراحِ
So the musician thought to dispel them with his fingers,
And the cupbearer chose to dispel them with wine.
