لا تَرتَجِ أَن تُخَصَّ بالإِطراءِ
مِنfrom غَيرِthe absence of يَدٍa favor منكfrom you وَلاnor نعماءِbounty
مِن غَيرِ يَدٍ منك وَلا نعماءِ
Do not hope to be singled out for praise
Do not expect to be praised
Without a favor or bounty from you.
Without effort or grace from you
لاnot تَضحَكُsmiles فيin وَجهِthe face of سماءٍa sky أَرضٌearth
لا تَضحَكُ في وَجهِ سماءٍ أَرضٌ
أَوuntil تُعطيَgives حَقَّهاits due مِنَof الأَنداءِdew
أَو تُعطيَ حَقَّها مِنَ الأَنداءِ
The earth does not smile in the sky’s face
Do not laugh in the face of the sky while the earth
Until the sky gives it its due of dew.
Denies the sky its rightful praise
