هَل يُمكِنُ في الغمدِ قَرارُ السَيفِ
أَوor يُخضَبَbe stained فيin الوَغىbattle شفارُthe edges السَيفِof the sword
أَو يُخضَبَ في الوَغى شفارُ السَيفِ
Can the sword rest in its scabbard,
Can the sword rest in its sheath,
Or can the sword’s edges be stained in battle?
Or its blade stay unbloodied in battle?
ماnot طارَflew عَنِfrom الجفنِthe eyelid غِراريmy brief slumber فَرَقاًout of fear
ما طارَ عَنِ الجفنِ غِراري فَرَقاً
إِنif فارَقَleft جِفنَهُits sheath غِرارُthe edge السَيفِof the sword
إِن فارَقَ جِفنَهُ غِرارُ السَيفِ
My brief slumber does not flee my eyelid in fear
My tears cease not to flow,
If the sword’s edge leaves its sheath.
If the sword's edge parts from my eyelid.
