واحرَّOh, the burning of أَضالعيmy ribs وواشوقاهُand oh, my longing!
واحرَّ أَضالعي وواشوقاهُ
أَفنىconsumed جَلَديmy endurance بَرحُthe torment of هَوىa love أَبقاهُhe kept it alive
أَفنى جَلَدي بَرحُ هَوى أَبقاهُ
Oh, how my ribs burn—and oh, my longing!
Oh, the burning in my ribs, and oh, my longing!
The torment of his love has exhausted my endurance—may God preserve him.
The torment of a love he kept alive has consumed my endurance.
مَنwho أَسوأُworse فيin هَواهُlove for him حالاًin condition مِنّيthan I
مَن أَسوأُ في هَواهُ حالاً مِنّي
إِنif أَمضِI depart بِحَسرَتيwith my anguish ولاand do not أَلقاهُmeet him
إِن أَمضِ بِحَسرَتي ولا أَلقاهُ
Who is worse off than I in loving him,
Who is worse off in loving him than I,
if I die of heartbreak and never meet him?
if I depart with my anguish and do not meet him?
