لَمّاwhen طَوتِshe concealed السِرَّthe secret عَنfrom الأَغيارoutsiders
لَمّا طَوتِ السِرَّ عَن الأَغيار
وَالقَومُand the people رَمواthey cast إِليَّtoward me بِالأَبصارِwith their eyes
وَالقَومُ رَموا إِليَّ بِالأَبصارِ
When she concealed the secret from outsiders,
When I concealed my secret from strangers
and the people cast their glances at me,
And people stared at me
عَمَّيتُI veiled أَحاديثَtales غَراميmy passion لَكِنbut
عَمَّيتُ أَحاديثَ غَرامي لَكِن
مِنfrom لَحنِthe undertone of كَلاميmy words فهمواthey understood أَسراريmy secrets
مِن لَحنِ كَلامي فهموا أَسراري
I veiled the tales of my passion, but
I obscured my words of love
from the undertone of my words they understood my secrets.
But from the melody of my speech they understood my secrets
