زارَتنيَshe visited me وَالظَلامُand the darkness قَدalready مَدَّstretched out يَداa hand
زارَتنيَ وَالظَلامُ قَد مَدَّ يَدا
تَشكوshe complains وَتَقولand she says طبتyou have been content بعديafter me خَلَداat heart
تَشكو وَتَقول طبت بعدي خَلَدا
She visited me while darkness had stretched out a hand.
She visited me when the darkness stretched out its hand
She complains and says, “You have been content at heart since I left.”
Complaining, saying after me came eternal sleep
لاno لاno وَصبابتيby my yearning إِلىfor وجهكyour face مُذsince
لا لا وَصبابتي إِلى وجهك مُذ
فارقتكI parted from you ماnot طابwas content فؤاديmy heart أَبَداًever
فارقتك ما طاب فؤادي أَبَداً
No, no—by my yearning for your face—since
No, no, my youth has yearned for your face ever since
I parted from you, my heart has never been content.
I left you, my heart has not felt comfort again
