O seeker of the truth in reports,
O seeker of news and wisdom regarding the nature of plagues,
and of judgment on the nature of plague:
Plagues have piercing stingers making holes as they spread,
أنthat الوباplague سميّةٌa poisonous substance دَبّاَقهْsticky
plague is a sticky poison,
Flowing into bodies, soaking fabrics whether wool or cotton,
clinging, penetrating, piercing.
Thriving amidst human friction, by summer spread more wanton,

إذاwhen سرىit permeates فيthrough الصوفwool أوor فيthrough القطنِcotton
It spreads through bodies as oil spreads
In winter cold may make it recede or disappear from sight,
when it permeates wool or cotton.
Yet if glimpsed it continues despite attempts to blight,

وكثرهُand its increase عندduring احتراكthe movement of الادميَهْhuman beings
For people, it is not a matter of corrupted air [wording unclear],
Such is the nature of this vicious, deathly disease,
and it increases as human beings move about.
Spread by touch, not scent or sight, its sting can't be appeased,
لذاكtherefore فيىin الفصلthe season الربيعspring يتّسِعْit spreads

وفيand in هجيرthe scorching heat of الصيفsummer قطعاًcertainly يندفعْit is repelled

Hence it spreads in the spring season,
Once entered it churns up humors like curdling milk,
and summer's scorching heat surely drives it away.
Then skin grows red and marked by bumps however ilk,

In winter, intense cold conceals it,
Or liquid may leak showing from armpit first to sight,
and, if it appears, prevents its spread.
Or neck or thighs after its churn brings such blight,

is to infect bodies through touch;
Some have compared its sting unto a piercing lance,
there is no ambiguity in what I have said.
As for its name, plagues kill many so in Arabic came its chance,
وليسand there is not بالشمِّthrough smelling لهاfor it منany فعلِeffect

It has no effect through smell;
The more its sting marks one, less the potency of its violation,
its penetrating poison ravages through touch.
For in numbers at times comes hope of preservation,
