And does my humility and passion ever finish?

Everything except the Creator has a limit and an end,
Everything but the Creator has a limit,
yet your displeasure—alas!—has no limit.
Yet Your displeasure - oh misery - has no limit.

Suppose your hard heart is like a boulder of rock;
Give me Your hard heart, like a rock's solidity,
for how often has hard stone yielded generously in pouring rain!
For how often has the solid rock given life?

With Your nearness, patience becomes sweet, yet
with you far, honey from the comb has turned bitter.
With Your distance, even honey turns bitter.

A maiden: I gave my soul for the promise of union with her;
A maiden pledged her soul in a promise,
so payment in hand was sweet to her, and the promise sweet to me.
So she found money but I found only the promise.

Leave me be to my own affairs, cease tormenting me,
Suppose I am the cheated one; I have no wish to take it back.
Grant that I'm the loser, I'm not pleased with rejection.

And suppose she persists in distance and coldness;
Grant that she persists in distance and disdain,
then my pride is that, despite enduring coldness, I remain a slave.
My pride is to persevere despite her disdain, a slave.

And nothing is more hurtful to a young man than separation;
And nothing equals distance in pain for a lad,
for what life is left to the yearning lover if separation afflicts him?
For without You life itself pains the longing lover.

And crossing them falls short, despite all effort.

Oh my woe! Will the rising tide perhaps assist?

Yet they did not distract me from thoughts of her.

How long shall I abase my soul, though it is proud,
To what extent can I humiliate myself when my soul refuses?
while my distance is nearness to her, and my nearness is distance?
After me comes nearness, and with nearness comes distance.

Who aspires to glory while losing the right path.

It is pride enough for a lad if he is a lover

That a Hind graces him with a smile from afar.

Thus in love, acceptance and refusal both bring sweetness.

So I said: My heart, be the scabbard.
