1. بدت في الكون أنوارٌ

    أهذا من سنا البدرِ

    Lights appeared in the universe.

    Is this from the full moon’s radiance,

  2. أم الأفلاك قد جليت

    فبانت أنجم الزهرِ

    or have the celestial spheres been polished,

    so that the radiant stars appeared?

  3. فلا هذا ولا هذا

    لقد نقَّصت بالقدرِ

    So neither this nor that—

    you have indeed diminished its worth.

  4. فهذا نور محبوبي

    يحاكي طلعة الفجرِ

    For this is my beloved’s light,

    resembling the dawn’s emergence.

  5. بدا في عامنا الزاهي

    أرخت الباسم الثغرِ

    It appeared in our radiant year;

    I recorded the date: “the smiling-mouthed one.”
