Is it your mouth, or lightning that appeared, or the full moon's glow?
Is that a smile, or is it lightning that flashed, or the full moon rising?
Your brow, or a light that recited the chapter of Dawn?
Is that light radiating across your brow, or the dawn's resplendent verse?

And your neck, or morning lights grown solid,
Are those the morning's luminous dawn condensed on your cheek,
With two necklaces of rain-beads hung upon them?
Adorned with two necklaces of pearl drops that trickle down?

A maiden on whose neck pearls are lovely; yet
The lovely girl's cheek is adorned with pearls;
When she takes them off, pearls have no beauty.
When she nods her head, the pearls lose their luster.

A Rusafa of beauty, guarded by an eyebrow's bow,
The elegance of her beauty is guarded by an arching brow
From the eye—nay, from the gaze of imagination and thought.
That shields her eyes from sight and thought alike.

And that gaze's swordsman gestures, calling:
The sword of that slender eyebrow daily calls out
Oryx eyes between Rusafa and the bridge!
To the doe-eyed girls between elegance and the bridge.

They ignorantly compared her breast to a pomegranate,
Yet there is a great difference, for anyone who knows.
Though the difference is plain to those who know:

Truly, it is beyond comparison, and its worth is exalted
It is far too sublime for such a simile,
Above plucking, scratching, touching, and breaking.
Too holy for plucking, squeezing, touching or tearing.

Rising above the mounds of her breasts against her chest?

Between them, the down has inscribed a verse
Like a surah of ants that crawled, hastening toward the raindrops.
Like a line of ants marching along seeking water.

I studied it closely: it is vegetation repeated;
I stared at her and saw the down repeating
My soul for a plant that shone in a garden of flowers!
Like vegetation flourishing in a garden of flowers.

I looked back but knelt down, for I had recited
Recited through it verses of ease without hardship.
Verses of ease without any trouble.

The hand of the Highest has composed its letters
Thus it came as guidance, having erased unbelief's darkness.
Thus it came as guidance, erasing the darkness of blasphemy.

Then his glad tidings are: may his two hands perish for all time!
For its relief has spread its hands for eternity.

I enjoyed it, by God, yet without wrongdoing.
Bestowed by God - yes, but without blemish?

With swaying rumps and cascading tresses,
So long that her slender waist complained of their length.
Their slender waists complain of the braids' length.

From loved ones, by God—and this is chaste love.
Of affection, by God, which is chaste passion:

The nights pass, and chastity is our bedding,
The nights pass while our bed retains its purity,
And there was no talebearer but the full moon's eye.
No pillow between us except the full moon's orb.

And she intoxicates me with her prose, not with wine.
And get drunk on her prose without any wine!

And through her glances we awaken slumbering thought.
And am awakened from her glances' sleepy thought.

Stop for a while, O bashful branch girl,
And lean toward me, for love dwells in my breast.
And incline toward me, for passion resides in my breast.

Do not leave me until my life reaches its end.

And this is patience, bitterer than aloes.
Such is patience – truly the matter is one of patience.

For I fear, if estrangement is prolonged, my faith may incline to blasphemy.
